GGF Recap- Sound Judgment scores decisive debut victory- 3/10/2019

Sound Judgment looks like a serious colt with a promising future. This 3yo gelding made his debut in a cal-bred MSW going 5 1/2f. He was sporting some very quick workouts heading into this race, and his trainer Greg James can get them ready first-out. Sound Judgment broke like a rocket and was sent straight to the lead by jockey William Antongeorgi. He carved out swift opening fractions up front (21.83, 44.76), and then kicked on with it to win by a dominant and easy 4 lengths. This was a very promising effort, and the speed figure should reflect that. The final time for the race was a swift 1:03.02. Leadville finished well off the layoff for 2nd, and Starring John Wain was able to get 3rd. Sound Judgment is by The Pamplemousse and out of a Street Sense mare. There is a lot of route pedigree on the dam side, and he is also a 1/2 brother to a Southern California route stakes winner in Shades of Victory. A few years ago we saw a cal-bred star in the James barn in Smokey Image. Could this be the next one? Only time will tell.

Also, making his first start on the tapeta, Moonoverthebayou showed a strong turn of foot to break his maiden in race 9. He was coming out of races down south and had the fastest sprinting speed figure in the field coming into this one. The son of New Year’s Day was loaded the whole way, and showed a strong finish in the lane to score by 4. Abel Cedillo did a great job keeping him out of trouble. The Bob Hess Jr runner stopped the clock in 1:10.36 for 6f. Sly ran on nicely for 2nd and showed some promise in his first start. Son of Smalls was able to hang on for 3rd.

Jockeys: Leading jockey Abel Cedillo led the way today with 2 wins. The other 8 races were won by 8 different riders.

  1. Cedillo *69* 2. Hernandez *52* 3. Martinez *34*

Trainers: It was a competitive day. All 10 races were won by different trainers.

  1. Wong *50* T-2. Morey, Hollendorfer *16*

A new ‘Horses to Watch’ list will be dropping on Wednesday, so be on the lookout for that.

Live racing resumes Thursday with a 7-race program. First post is 12:45pm.
